iPhone 12 is being dubbed the most exciting phone of 2020. But does it live up to the expectations?

Apple announced four new iPhones and a HomePod mini smart speaker during its “Hi, Speed” October event, and though everyone is hyped about the new products(including myself, watched the event 3 times), We really need to take a look in which direction is Apple heading.

The highlight of the event was 5G, though Super Retina XDR OLED DISPLAY (Yes, that’s the name of their display, thanks to Apple’s “Crack marketing team”- as Craig Federighi often says) was a bigger deal in terms of improvement that would be truly beneficial for now. It's the first time where Apple is finally offering edge to edge design with an exception of the Face Id notch and small bezels around the edges.

The 5.4 inch iPhone 12 mini has a resolution of 2430 x 1080 with 476 pixels per inch and the 6.1 inch iPhone 12 has a resolution of 2532 x 1170 with 460 pixels per inch. The displays offer HDR support with 1200 nits peak brightness, Wide Color for true colors, Haptic Touch for feedback, and True Tone to match the color temperature of the display to the ambient lighting.

Now, for a phone that starts at $799, the use of OLED is not very appreciable in Context of what their other competitors are doing. The display is sharp and accurate, no doubt, but with other companies offering much better SUPER AMOLED display for under $400, Apple needs to demonstrate that they are still market leaders, and not living inside a bubble.

Over these years, Apple built the products that everyone loved. But now, the sheer ignorance, and Apple pretending that no other product better than iPhone exist in the market is starting to cause discomfort even in Apple’s fanboys.

Take for instance, when Apple announced the “iPad Pro killer” iPad Air 2020, where they termed the integration of touch ID in Power button as some “Revolutionary Technology”. Statements like these are coming at a time when $300 phones are featuring these “Revolutionary Technologies”.

Talking about the Overall design, flat edges instead of the round ones, is Nostalgic and I really like that design. Though I still believe that Touch iD is much better than Face iD if it is helping to remove that ugly notch from the display. We deserve full bezel-less display in 2020, at least.

Regarding my view on 5G, there needs to be a wider deployment of 5G around the world in order for the superfast dream to be truly realized.

A14

There’s a new A14 chip inside the iPhone 12 models, and it is the first chip in the smartphone industry built on a 5-nanometer process for performance and efficiency improvements. Apple is known for fastest chips in the market, So this is no surprise but it’s always great to have the newest, fastest chip. The A14 chip powers new computational photography, which improves the Deep Fusion for better photos with more texture, less noise and improved Night mode with better contrast in images.

Like the iPhone 12 Pro models, the iPhone 12 models can capture 30fps HDR video with Dolby Vision, enabling cinema-grade videos to be captured, edited, and shared right on the iPhone. It also supports 4K video recording at 60fps. There’s improved cinematic video stabilization, along with Dolby Vision selfie videos using the True Depth camera.

BATTERY

The ‌iPhone 12‌ and ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ have the same 2,815 mAh battery inside. This is another area where Apple tends to forget that other phones exist in the market. In 2020, where phones under $400 have 5000–6000 mAH battery, a mere 2,815 mAH battery is a big bummer. People tend to underestimate and underrate how important a battery is in a smartphone. They tend to give arguments like “we’ll carry a powerbank” , like seriously!, is this the reason why you are paying over $800 ?

Overall the iPhone 12 along with other models is worth buying if you are deeply embedded into Apple’s ecosystem . If not, then better wait till Apple releases iPhones with Amoled, higher refresh rate displays and better battery life.
